Hi! My name is Joy Tjoelker and I have been teaching private piano lessons to students of all ages since 1980. Teaching students to play piano is one of my greatest passions. Watching them learn increasingly sophisticated music and then using that knowledge to create their own music is the source of some of my greatest joys.
My home studio is located near I-405 in north Kirkland, WA, convenient to Woodinville, Bothell, Bellevue, Redmond and south Snohomish County. I teach all ages, from beginners to intermediate level students. Weekly sessions are 30 or 40 minutes in length; each lesson is tailored to the needs of each student.
There has always been music in my life. I was raised in a musical home, where my mother taught piano lessons and directed church choirs, my father sang solos, and my brothers played instruments. My parents encouraged me to pursue my passion of keyboard and stringed instrument arts by arranging for twice weekly piano lessons and weekly organ and viola lessons. I studied piano under Martha Helder and organ with Claire vg Thomas and attended Calvin College.
I have been an Adjunct Instructor of Piano at Northwest University since 2006, teaching individualized piano lessons to adults. I also was a K-9 Music Specialist at Bellevue Christian School for 9 years, focusing on general music education for elementary students while meeting and exceeding WA State instruction goals.
In addition to working in schools, I have had extensive work experience in churches, starting as an accompanist at age 12 for a children’s choir and at age 14 as a regular church organist for services. I am celebrating over 40 years of work in different Protestant churches as choir director/organist/ pianist/music director.
I am an active member of Washington State Music Teachers Association at national, state and city levels, as well as The Music Workshop Group in Bothell, Washington.
In my spare time, I create paper and fabric gifts. I am a rubberstamp enthusiast, quilter and fabric artist specializing in upcycling the materials found in the world around me. A lot of my art centers on music.
